Abstract
This study is to compare the elderly injured inpatients with or without dementia and analyze the factors affecting the injuries of dementia patients using in-depth survey data provided by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2013 to 2017. As the results of the study, gender, age, hospitalization route, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), place of occurrence (road), damage mechanism (falling, poisoning), dislocation among damage types, lower limbs among damaged areas, and treatment results showed that they affected the damages of elderly dementia patients. In the case of women, the older the age, the higher was the hospitalization route in the emergency room, and the higher the CCI score, and in the cases of falling, transportation accident, poisoning, dislocation, the lower limbs among the damage areas, the higher were the risks of damages. However, in the cases of roads and residents at the place of occurrence and of death as the treatment results showed the risks of damage lower. The number of dementia elderly people is increasing due to the increase in the elderly population and the prolongation of life expectancy, which pushes up the treatment and management costs of patients and puts a burden on the national medical finance. Therefore, it is desperately required to prepare measures to minimize such damages. We hope this study will be useful for the basic data to establish policies to prevent damage to the elderly with dementia caused in accordance with an aging population.
